Luigi Mangione, who is currently being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) in Brooklyn, has taken on the role of an orderly while awaiting his federal and state trials.

This job primarily involves cleaning duties, such as tidying common areas and restrooms.

Federal prison consultants have noted that this type of work is one of the few jobs available to inmates in a detention center due to the high level of security and restrictions. An orderly’s work is a common way for inmates to stay busy and potentially earn minor privileges.

Mangione, an Ivy League graduate, is the prime suspect in the high-profile murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. He faces an extensive list of charges from both federal and state prosecutors:

  • Federal Charges: A federal grand jury has indicted him on charges including murder through the use of a firearm, which makes him eligible for the death penalty. Federal prosecutors have officially announced their intent to seek his execution.

  • State Charges: In New York, he faces 11 state charges, including murder in the first degree and murder as a crime of terrorism. The state charges carry a maximum sentence of life in prison, as the death penalty is not legal in New York.

Mangione has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

His case has garnered significant public attention and debate, with his defense team arguing that the federal pursuit of the death penalty is a political move. His state and federal trials are expected to proceed on parallel tracks, though no trial dates have been set.
