Netflix has unveiled a first look at its new coming-of-age drama series, Boots, set to premiere on October 9.
The eight-episode show is a comedic drama that offers an “off-beat take” on the coming-of-age story, inspired by the memoir The Pink Marine by former U.S. Marine Greg Cope White.
The series is set in the 1990s, a time when it was still illegal to be openly gay in the U.S. military under the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy.
The plot centers on Cameron Cope, a directionless, closeted teen, played by Miles Heizer (13 Reasons Why), who impulsively enlists in the Marines with his straight best friend, Ray McAffey (Liam Oh), the son of a decorated Marine.
The show follows the diverse group of recruits as they navigate the physical and emotional challenges of boot camp. The series is being marketed as a story of friendship, resilience, and finding your place in a world that seems determined to break you down.
The cast also features Vera Farmiga as Cameron’s narcissistic mother, Barbara, and Max Parker as Sgt. Sullivan, an elite Marine who secretly struggles with his own past and sees himself in Cameron.
The show’s creative team includes creator and co-showrunner Andy Parker, showrunner Jennifer Cecil, and the late legendary producer Norman Lear, who is credited as an executive producer.
