Responding to the decision to lower flags to half-staff in Massachusetts, a member of the Massachusetts Governor’s Council, Mara Dolan, expressed her disagreement on social media.

The action was taken to honor conservative activist Charlie Kirk, following an order from the President.

According to a report from MassLive‘s Heather Morrison, Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey had ordered flags to be lowered at all state buildings from Thursday until Sunday, September 14, in observance of Kirk’s death.

Mara Dolan, an attorney elected to the council in 2024, challenged the tribute, stating on social media that the flags should not be lowered for Kirk.

She argued that the President’s order was not legally binding and that there was a basis for the state to disregard it.

She further explained her position by stating that Kirk was not an elected official and that his views were, in her opinion, contrary to the values of equal justice and freedom held in Massachusetts.

“He was not an elected representative of the people. He was racist, sexist, homophobic, and did not support Massachusetts values of equal justice and freedom,” said Dolan.
