State Representative James Talarico has emerged victorious in a high-stakes Democratic primary for the U.S. Senate, defeating U.S.Representative Jasmine Crockett to become the party’s nominee in what has become one of the most closely watched races of the 2026 midterm cycle.
The Associated Press projected Talarico as the winner early Wednesday morning following a robust turnout.
Talarico,a former middle school teacher and current Presbyterian seminarian, centered his campaign on a “politics of love” and a populist “top-versus-bottom” message, successfully appealing to a broad coalition of voters across urban centers and rural Texas districts.
Talarico’s campaign has been defined by his attempt to reclaim faith-based language from conservatives to promote a more inclusive vision for Texas.
Central to his platform is the advocacy for human rights, including strong support for the LGBTQ+ community.
Throughout his time in the Texas House and during this Senate campaign, Talarico has been a vocal proponent of equality, consistently voting against measures that target transgender youth and supporting legislation that protects LGBTQ+ individuals from discrimination in housing, employment, and public spaces.
His campaign messaging emphasizes that true inclusivity is a core tenet of his faith, arguing that all Texans deserve dignity and the freedom to be their authentic selves.
