Iconic fashion designer Giorgio Armani, a titan of the industry who revolutionized modern style, has passed away at the age of 91.

The beloved designer, who was openly gay, died peacefully at his home in Milan on Thursday, September 4, surrounded by his loved ones.

Armani, often referred to as “King Giorgio” in his native Italy, was renowned for his understated elegance, soft tailoring, and minimalist aesthetic. He founded his company, Giorgio Armani S.p.A., in 1975 with his longtime business and life partner, Sergio Galeotti. Together, they built a global empire that went far beyond clothing, encompassing accessories, cosmetics, home furnishings, hotels, and even a basketball team.

Armani’s influence was profound and lasting. He is credited with pioneering the “power suit” for both men and women, a symbol of the ambitious 1980s that changed how professionals dressed. His designs, characterized by a refined and effortless look, became a favorite of Hollywood, and he was a fixture on red carpets for decades.

In a statement, the Armani Group confirmed his passing, saying, “Indefatigable to the end, he worked until his final days, dedicating himself to the company, the collections, and the many ongoing and future projects.” The designer had been in declining health and had missed his runway shows at Milan Fashion Week in June for the first time in his career. A public viewing will be held in Milan over the weekend, followed by a private funeral.

Tributes from around the world have poured in from political leaders, fellow designers like Donatella Versace, and countless fans, all mourning the loss of a creative genius who shaped the very definition of modern luxury. His legacy will continue through the independent company he built and the timeless style he introduced to the world.
