Prime Minister Rob Jetten
In a major policy commitment delivered at WorldPride, Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten announced that the Netherlands will dedicate $8.66 million (€7.5 million) annually over the next three years to significantly bolster safety initiatives for the LGBTQ+ community.
Delivering the keynote address at the opening of the WorldPride Human Rights Conference in Amsterdam on Wednesday, August 5, Jetten – the country’s first openly gay prime minister – outlined a multi-pronged strategy aimed at countering anti-LGBTQ+ sentiment.
The dedicated multi-year fund will support community-led programs, enhance safety measures in public spaces and workplaces, and launch campaigns to challenge systemic discrimination and stem the tide of online disinformation targeting queer individuals.
Speaking directly to international delegates, Jetten issued a stark warning regarding the global erosion of LGBTQ+ rights, calling out organized efforts to normalize hate speech online and in public discourse.
The investment underscores the Dutch government’s intent to proactively safeguard civil rights and protect marginalized communities against rising socio-political hostility across Europe.
