Allan Deberton’s new film, The Best Friend (O Melhor Amigo), is a romantic musical comedy set to premiere at various LGBTQ+ film festivals worldwide.
The movie, which runs for 94 minutes and is in Portuguese with English subtitles, explores themes of friendship, identity, and the complexities of rekindled romance. The film was produced by Deberton Filmes with support from major studios like Telecine, Globo, and Universal.
The story follows two best friends who are reunited after a five-year separation. The reunion stirs up old, unresolved feelings between them, forcing them to confront their past and decide what they truly want for the future.
The narrative is a mix of romantic-comedy tropes with musical numbers, which some early reviews have noted as sometimes feeling slightly out of place but ultimately contributing to the film’s entertaining nature.
The movie stars Claudia Ohana, Gabriel Fuentes, and Diego Montez, and is written and directed by Deberton himself.
Following the critical success of his debut feature Pacarrete, which received numerous awards and accolades, Deberton’s latest film has garnered attention on the festival circuit.
The Best Friend has been selected for several prominent LGBTQ+ film festivals, including the Inside Out Toronto LGBT Film Festival, Wicked Queer Boston’s LGBTQ Film Festival, and Cinema Diverse: The Palm Springs LGBTQ Film Festival.
Currently there is no information about a wide theatrical or streaming release date.
