A Final Look at Queer Art: Getty Center’s Special Programs for Closing Photography Exhibits

With two related exhibitions, “Queer Lens: A History of Photography”and “$3 Bill: Evidence of Queer Lives,” set to close on September 28, the Getty Center is hosting two special public programs for visitors to enjoy during the final weeks of the shows.

George Platt Lynes’s Probing Stare

Saturday, September 20, 2025, at 2 pm. Getty Center and Online

Art historian and queer activist Jonathan D. Katz will give a talk on American photographer George Platt Lynes (1907-1955), whose work explored the concept of the “gaze.” Lynes created many images during a time when the gaze carried more social weight than it does today. His work is considered some of the earliest to not only capture the burden of social stigma but also to show a deliberate resistance to it.

Screening: Made in Hollywood

Sunday, September 21, 2025, at 4 pm. Getty Center

The Getty Center, in partnership with ONE Institute, will host a screening of the film Made in Hollywood (Bruce and Norman Yonemoto, 1990, 56 minutes). This allegorical satire uses the language of advertising and mass media to explore themes of emotion, identity, reality, and fantasy. The screening will include an introduction from director Bruce Yonemoto.
