Colin Firth, Nicholas Hoult. “A Single Man”
Tom Ford’s upcoming film Cry to Heaven, his first directorial project since 2016’s Nocturnal Animals, reunites the director with A Single Man stars Nicholas Hoult and Colin Firth for a visually lavish adaptation of Anne Rice’s 1982 gothic novel.
Set in 18th-century Italy, the narrative explores fluid sexuality, obsession, and revenge within the secret world of the castrati – young male opera singers whose soprano voices were surgically preserved before puberty.
The story follows Tonio Treschi, a Venetian nobleman betrayed and castrated by his family to steal his inheritance. Under the guidance of Guido Maffeo, a peasant-born master singer, Tonio transforms into a celebrated soprano star in the high-society opera houses of Venice and Naples, using his artistry and fame to orchestrate a calculated revenge.
Self-financed through Ford’s Fade to Black Productions with Anne Rice’s son, Christopher Rice, producing, the screenplay directly taps into Rice’s signature themes of gender presentation, tragic outcast identities, and intense male bonds.
Nocturnal Animals lead Aaron Taylor-Johnson joins Hoult and Firth to anchor a massive ensemble cast featuring Hunter Schafer, Lux Pascal, Thandiwe Newton, George MacKay, Paul Bettany, Ciarán Hinds, Mark Strong, Daryl McCormack, Owen Cooper, and singer Adele in her feature acting debut.
Target releases position the film for a late autumn 2026 theatrical and festival run.
