Tucker Carlson is once again tripling down on his baseless claim that Pete Buttigieg isn’t genuinely gay, a ridiculously false narrative he has been pushing for years.
During a recent episode of his show, he went so far as to call the former Secretary of Transportation “the fake gay guy.”
The claim is not just an insult; it’s a completely nonsensical attempt to discredit Buttigieg’s identity and life story. Carlson seems to argue that Buttigieg’s sexuality is somehow invalid because he did not come out until he was in his thirties. This line of reasoning is a profound display of ignorance regarding the realities of the LGBTQ+ experience, particularly for those who grew up in less accepting times.
Buttigieg’s personal journey, which he has shared publicly, is a textbook example of a person navigating a difficult world. When he joined the Navy Reserve in 2009, the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy was still in effect, which meant he could not be openly gay without risking his military career.
The policy was not officially repealed until 2011, the same year Buttigieg was elected mayor of South Bend, Indiana. It wasn’t until 2015, after he had established his career and the legal landscape had shifted, that he felt comfortable coming out publicly.
