Ellen DeGeneres made headlines this weekend for an on-stage conversation with U.K. host Richard Bacon, reported by the BBC, where she revealed her decision to make the U.K. her permanent home.

This move, she stated, was influenced by Donald Trump‘s re-election as U.S. President in November 2024. DeGeneres expressed a strong preference for life in the U.K., citing its beauty, charming villages, simpler way of life, and politeness of people, asserting that “life is just better” there.

During the interview, DeGeneres also touched upon the efforts by some in the U.S. to reverse same-sex marriage rights, noting that she and her wife, Portia de Rossi, are considering getting married again in the U.K. should such a reversal occur.

Furthermore, she addressed the allegations of a toxic workplace culture on her former U.S. talk show, as well as the “mean” label she received from some media. DeGeneres attributed this perception to her being a “direct and blunt” person, expressing her hurt over the reputation and stating that she knows herself to be an “empathetic, compassionate person.” She admitted that the controversies made for an “unpleasant way to end” her talk show.
