An interview with the winner of this year’s Mr. LA Leather contest, Angel Rincon, Mr. Sister Leather 2020
BY MARK ARIEL
Congratulations Angel! Now that you’ve had a few days to digest it all—how are you feeling?
I’m still in shock!
How you got involved in the leather/kink community?
Well it all started with a break up. I had always had fantasies and desires. But I would just keep them in my mind and while we would have sex those fantasies would play in my mind. So one day I decided to go to Faultline. Seeing all those hot bodies and everyone enjoying it I needed more. Then I stumbled on Eagle LA. Let me tell you I was in fantasies heaven. Everything I thought about and all my secret desires are now a reality… After learning about AIDS Life Cycle and a group of clowns that did fundraisers and pool parties I needed to get involved. I joined the Cyclpaths and that’s when I decided I need to learn more about those clowns. Those clowns are the Payasos. Those folks taught me what it means to be sex positive and body positive.
At what point did you decide to compete for titles?
It was after running into Marpa Franzoni! I was intrigued and wanted to learn more. Scarlett Sin would then open the door. She told me all about Mr Sister Leather and how it represented the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence. I was hooked. Not only did Mr Sister describe who I am but then knowing it would represent the sisters, I was hooked. Never did I think I would win Mr Sisters Leather 2020 let alone Mr Los Angeles Leather 2022.
“Whoever and whatever you identify as, you never have to be ashamed. Be the purest form of you and you can’t go wrong.”
What topics are close to your heart—and how would you like to highlight those topics during your tenure as Mr. LA Leather 2022?
The main thing for me is visibility. For all those femme butch queens! We’ve always been shamed or looked down on. Or there is only one “type” of a leather person. I’m here to show up and show out there are several types of leather people. We’re masc we’re femme we’re butch queens we’re trans we’re bears—we are WE! Waive your freak flag and be proud of who you are. Additionally—having open communication about U=U, fundraising for the LGBT and continue to support the Trans Latin Coalition. It’s important to me to always create a conversation. Not everyone will agree with what I believe however those conversations are a learning opportunity for me and for them. And if I could get them to think then I’ve done my job.
Any final thoughts?
Whoever and whatever you identify as, you never have to be ashamed. Be the purest form of you and you can’t go wrong. I grew up being ashamed, thinking I needed to hide my true authentic self. Look at me now! No shame, no pretending. Let’s be kind to one another. We’re all fighting a fight, some more than others. Remember a little kindness goes a long way.
