TRANSCENDING RECOVERY

The West Hollywood Recovery Center is hosting a transgender-focused NA Meeting at the Log Cabin Wednesday nights. We asked these clean and sober individuals the importance of having a trans-inclusive space

FOCUSED SPACE

“West Hollywood has a large recovery community, and I believe many—especially trans individuals—will benefit from this meeting. Despite being part of the LGBTQ+ community, trans women still face stigma from within. This focused space allows us to speak freely about addiction and trans-specific issues without fear of offensive language. We need support to reach non-binary and trans people in recovery houses, letting them know there’s a safe 90-minute space to experience the beauty of a drug-free life.”

HOME BASE

“I was originally against a trans-specific NA meeting because I believed any room would welcome me, but I eventually realized I needed a ‘home base.’ Specialized literature and a focused space make it easier to discuss certain issues comfortably. I transitioned within these rooms, and it’s a lifelong journey. I love the diversity here—we leave the doors open for anyone. Located near The Abbey, we provide a nearby beacon for those seeking hope. If our doors and minds remain open, anyone can walk in and find the recovery they need.”

DEEP NEED

“Running the Transgender Health Program at St. John’s Community Health, Azul, Eureka, and I noticed that Narcotics Anonymous was underrepresented at the West Hollywood Recovery Center. We saw an opportunity to start a 12-step fellowship specifically for the TGI community, as there aren’t many spaces tailored to our needs. Eureka reached out to the board to create this environment where people feel truly supported. While other meetings are welcoming, they often aren’t as affirming regarding pronouns and trans-specific issues. Every week is empowering; even when we worry the meeting might not work out, people from all walks of life show up, proving the deep need for this space.”

—Veronica Fernandez, clean since September 5, 2022.

The NA Transcending Recovery meeting is every Wednesday from 6-7:30pm
at the Log Cabin, 621 N Robertson Blvd, West Hollywood CA, 90069
