The Grief of Recognition: Why Bomi and Huwei’s Breakdown Hit So Close to Home

BY PATRICK TSAKUDA

Bomi and Huwei’s breakdown in Season 2, Episode 11 of The Boyfriend on Netflix was particularly emotional to watch because it was a visceral reminder that in our world, love doesn’t just heal; it often hurts because it forces us to confront the versions of ourselves we’ve spent a lifetime trying to hide.

Bomi didn’t just cry because he was frustrated or feeling rejected; he broke down because he saw himself in Huwei’s struggle. There is a specific, agonizing kind of heartbreak in watching someone you care about stay trapped in a cage you only recently escaped.

As Huwei shared his coming-out story – the isolation, the fear of disappointment, the “stuckness” – Bomi wasn’t just listening; he was vibrating with empathy. Taking Bomi’s background into account, he was raised with that “don’t be a burden” mentality, where you learn to be composed and quiet to keep the peace.

Hearing Huwei’s story was like hearing his own private history played back to him. He burst into tears because he recognized the exact weight Huwei had been carrying. He cried for Huwei, but he also cried for the younger version of himself, who had to navigate that same darkness alone.

If you have no idea what I’m writing about—run, don’t walk—and watch The Boyfriend on Netflix. You won’t be sorry.
