A diplomatic row has erupted over the 2026 FIFA World Cup match between Iran and Egypt in Seattle, after the host city planned to brand the game a “Pride Match” in support of the LGBTQ+ community.

The Iranian Football Federation (FFIRI) publicly denounced the plan as “irrational” and politically motivated, arguing that it violates the non-political nature of international sports. Iran has strict laws against homosexuality.

The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) has also privately signaled discomfort with the branding due to conservative domestic norms.

The Seattle organizing committee is standing firm, using the June match (during Pride Month) to showcase its values of diversity and inclusion.

The clash forces FIFA to confront the tension between the tournament’s supposed neutrality and the progressive values of a U.S. host city.
