In response to the increased number of monkeypox cases being reported in Southern California, the Los Angeles LGBT Center is committed to providing up-to-date, factual, non-judgmental information and care during this evolving monkeypox outbreak.

- As of July 6, there have been 42 probable and confirmed cases of this virus in Los Angeles (117 in California and 605 in the US) and all L.A. cases have occurred in gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men. - The virus is spread mainly during prolonged intimate contact.
- Most infections cause mild illness that goes away without treatment.
- For best prevention, avoid close physical contact—both sexual and non-sexual—with people who have symptoms of an illness, sores, or rashes. Condoms may provide some protection if used consistently.
- If exposed or concerned about new symptoms, contact your primary care provider by phone or email immediately, describe your symptoms, and ask about next steps for care. If you do not have a primary care provider, call 2-1-1 for more information and to access care.
- Vaccines are currently available only for those with known exposures, and only from the Health Department. Vaccine supply will increase in the coming months.
- Treatment is available for severe cases but must be obtained by your medical provider from the Health Department.
