WEST HOLLYWOOD

TRUCK TERRORIZES COMMUNITY WITH RACIST, HOMOPHOBIC SLURS

A large U-Haul truck covered with antisemitic messages drove from the city of Beverly Hills to West Hollywood and yelled racist and homophobic slurs at people on the street. Videos posted on Twitter show two individuals getting into heated confrontations with community members on Santa Monica Boulevard last month. Authorities said the incident was being investigated as a hate incident. WeHo Times reports that U-Haul has banned the customer who rented the truck for “Multiple actions taken by this customer were in violation of our equipment rental contract agreement,” said a representative “Beyond the appalling behavior of the customer and his acquaintances, this was a clear misuse of our equipment.”

SAN DIEGO

LGBT CENTER REOPENS ITS DOORS

San Diego’s LGBTQ Center has reopened its doors to the community in Hillcrest after shutting down in March 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. For the past two years, staff members did their best to provide services online when possible. The Center held its official welcome-back celebration with hundreds of people showing up to walk through the front doors again and see thousands of dollars in renovations and improvements on Saturday, May 16, 2022. Despite its closure, food distribution never stopped. The Center went from serving 600 people a month in 2020 to more than 2,000 currently.

ORANGE COUNTY

ACTOR ANDY DICK ARRESTED ON SEXUAL ASSAULT

Out gay actor, Andy Dick, was arrested on sexual battery in Orange County. OC Sheriff’s deputies were called to O’Neill Regional Park, located at 30892 Trabuco Canyon Road in Trabuco Canyon last month after a man called 911 and said that actor and comedian sexually assaulted him. Dick, 56, was arrested on suspicion of felony sexual battery and booked into an Orange County jail. The alleged victim was taken to a hospital for an assault examination.

LONG BEACH

CITY HOSTS INTERNATIONAL LGBTQ CONFERENCE

The city of Long Beach hosted the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association—better known as the ILGA World—conference last month. More than 600 human rights activists gathered to celebrate the achievements made by LGBTQ communities and assess the struggles still left to overcome on a policy, cultural and systemic level. The conference was hosted by the It Gets Better Project, a Los Angeles-based nonprofit with a mission to uplift LGBTQ communities globally. It is held once every two years. This year’s programming was on challenges that LGBTQ youth face today.
