California ranks as top state for LGBTQ population

California has the largest number of LGBTQ Americans, followed by Texas, Florida, New York, and Pennsylvania, reports The San Joaquin Valley Sun.

The data comes from a study by the Williams Institute at UCLA. 

California has over 1.5 million LGBTQ people, with Texas being the only other state to top one million. 

Washington, D.C. has the highest percentage of LGBTQ residents, with about 14.3% of the population identifying as LGBTQ.

Other states with high LGBTQ populations include Oregon, Delaware, Vermont, and New Hampshire.

The South has the largest share of LGBTQ adults compared to other regions, with nearly 36% of LGBTQ Americans residing there.

The Midwest and Northeast regions also have significant proportions of LGBTQ residents, with 21.1% and 18.5% respectively. 

Young adults aged 18 to 24 make up the largest share of LGBTQ Americans, at 15.2%.

The percentage of people identifying as LGBTQ decreases with age, with only about 1.8% of those 65 and older identifying as LGBTQ.
