The First Gay Klingon, Karim Diané, Bids Farewell to “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy”

Karim Diané

The cancellation of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy – confirmed to end after its upcoming second season – hit especially hard for Karim Diané, the 23-year-old actor who made history as the franchise’s first openly gay Klingon, Jay-Den Kraag.

Diané’s portrayal was a deliberate departure from the “warrior” stereotype; Jay-Den was a sensitive, science-minded cadet aspiring to be a medical officer.

His response to the news has been a mix of heartbreak and pride

On March 24, 2026, Diané posted a vulnerable video to Instagram and TikTok, admitting that the news was “really hard to say.”

He reflected on the honor of making 20 episodes within the Star Trek universe, calling his cast mates some of the most talented artists in the industry.

He expressed disappointment that the journey was ending just as the cast had hit their stride, noting that Season 2 (which has already wrapped filming) is “Season 1 turned all the way up.”

He vowed to keep the community alive by sharing behind-the-scenes content and personal stories from the set throughout the airing of the final season.
