Netflix’s new military dramedy, Boots, has rocketed up the streaming charts, climbing to the No. 1 spot in the U.S. and becoming a global viewing sensation just days after a stunning official rebuke from the Pentagon.

The military drama, which follows a closeted teenager who enlists in the Marine Corps in the 1990s (pre-Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell), drew fire a few weeks ago from the administration.

Pentagon Press Secretary Kingsley Wilson slammed the series, stating that the U.S. military “will not compromise our standards to satisfy an ideological agenda, unlike Netflix whose leadership consistently produces and feeds “woke garbage” to their audience and children.”

The harsh criticism, intended to warn audiences away, appears to have backfired spectacularly.

Speaking after the show secured its top spot on the charts, series creator and showrunner Andy Parker appeared to welcome the controversy, suggesting the viral condemnation contributed directly to the drama’s sudden surge in popularity.

“I guess we have to give some credit to the Pentagon there, don’t we?” Parker joked in an interview, referencing the massive visibility generated by the official statement.

Boots, which is based on the memoir The Pink Marine, has been praised by critics for its sensitive yet authentic portrayal of boot camp, exploring themes of resilience, friendship, and self-discovery within a hyper-masculine environment.

Parker emphasized that the series was not created as “propaganda,” but rather as a story about the universal cost of restrictive policies on the individuals who serve. The dramatic chart climb is a clear indication that a significant portion of the audience is eager to see the show the Pentagon warned them against.
