Paul Mescal. Scene from “The History of Sound”
“The History of Sound,” a new historical drama from director Oliver Hermanus, promises a tender portrayal of a gay love story set in the aftermath of World War I.
Based on Ben Shattuck‘s short story, the film focuses on Lionel (Paul Mescal) and David (Josh O’Connor), two young men whose lives become intertwined after meeting in 1916.
As they embark on a journey across rural New England in the summer of 1919 to record the voices and music of the era, a significant romantic relationship blossoms between them.
The film will delve into themes of love and loss, set against the historical context and the beauty of American folk traditions.
“The History of Sound” is set for its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2025, with a wider release expected later in the year through Mubi (US/Canada) and Focus Features/Universal Pictures (international).
