At the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards on September 14, 2026, LGBTQ+ talent and dedicated allies achieved major milestones across key acting, writing, and reality television categories.
Longtime ally and queer icon Jean Smart captured her fifth consecutive Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for her portrayal of legendary comic Deborah Vance in Hacks. The hit HBO Max comedy further solidified its standing as a landmark of queer storytelling, with co-creators Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs, and Jen Statsky taking home the trophy for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series.
The ceremony also celebrated prominent queer talent, notably Alan Cumming, who won Outstanding Host for a Reality or Reality Competition Program for his work on Peacock’s The Traitors. The popular competition series scored a major victory by claiming the award for Outstanding Reality Competition Series.
In short-form content, comedian Desi Lydic was recognized at the Creative Arts ceremony, winning Outstanding Performer in a Short Form Comedy or Drama Series for The Daily Show: Desi Lydic Foxsplains.
Queer representation extends deeply into the drama categories as well. Apple TV+’s Pluribus, which centers on a lesbian protagonist portrayed by Rhea Seehorn, earned top honors with Seehorn’s win for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series alongside Vince Gilligan’s win for Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series.
Beyond the winners’ circle, the 2026 ceremony was defined by a strong field of LGBTQ+ stars and allies nominated in major categories. Colman Domingo (The Four Seasons) and Michael Urie (Shrinking) both received nods for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series, while Hannah Einbinder and Megan Stalter carried nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for Hacks. They were joined in celebration by fellow nominees Zendaya (Euphoria) in Drama and Claire Danes (The Beast in Me) in Limited Series.
