The rumor mill sparked back into a frenzy just days ago, when Sony Pictures Classics posted a cryptic video clip from the original 2017 coming-of-age romance Call Me By Your Name on social media with the simple caption, “Tomorrow….#cmbyn.”
While internet communities immediately went into overdrive speculating that a surprise announcement for a film sequel was finally happening, the reality is much more modest. The studio’s teases are actually tied to special LGBTQ+ Pride Month theatrical re-releases and physical media upgrades rather than a new feature film.
A true on-screen continuation has been stuck in development limbo for years, despite early momentum following the massive critical success of the original movie, which starred Timothée Chalamet as Elio and Armie Hammer as Oliver.
Director Luca Guadagnino had originally envisioned a multi-film chronicle tracking the two characters as they aged – a concept that gained traction after author André Aciman published the companion novel Find Me in 2019.
However, the project hit consecutive roadblocks; the COVID-19 pandemic severely disrupted initial script development, and subsequent personal controversies surrounding Hammer effectively halted any plans for a direct on-screen reunion.
Concurrently, Chalamet’s meteoric rise to Hollywood’s absolute A-list has left him with an incredibly tight filming schedule. While Guadagnino has recently reiterated that he would still love to direct a standalone “Elio movie” tracking the character’s solo journey later in life, a true sequel exploring the central romance remains firmly on pause.
