D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai. Scene from “A Long Winter”
Directed by Andrew Haigh (All of Us Strangers, Weekend) and adapted from a story by acclaimed author Colm Tóibín, A Long Winter is a deeply intimate 1950s drama that weaves quiet homoerotic tension and themes of repressed queer identity into its frozen frontier setting.
Set on an isolated Colorado farmstead during a brutal winter, the family dynamic begins to fracture after the disappearance of the matriarch, Louise (Caitríona Balfe). As father Lester (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) and his sons Mikey (Fred Hechinger) and Tommy (Kit Connor) are trapped together by the fierce weather, the breakdown of domestic routine opens up space for raw emotional confessions and tender, lingering connections.
Haigh leans heavily into his trademark style—exploring the quiet, suffocating agony of unspoken desire and intimacy in an era that demanded rigid conformity.
Other cast members include D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, Martin Freeman, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo and David Furr.
Following its critical festival run (including Telluride, TIFF, and NYFF), the film is scheduled for a wide theatrical release (US & Canada) on January 22, 2027.
