Scene from “No Rest for the Wicked”
Following a celebrated festival run that included winning the prestigious Cheval Noir Award at the Fantasia International Film Festival, the breakout gothic supernatural drama No Rest for the Wicked has officially been acquired by Altered Innocence for a theatrical release in 2027.
Set against the bleak, isolated landscape of the Faroe Islands in 1862, the film tells a dark, atmospheric story of a gay romance between a young local fisherman and Helge, a rugged Danish whaler played by Game of Thrones and Overlord star Pilou Asbæk.
As an intense and forbidden attraction develops between the two men, their secret relationship collides with the rigid dogmatism of their deeply religious community. The resulting tragedy awakens ancient, malevolent forces, turning a tender love story into a haunting, supernatural nightmare.
Directed by Kasper Kalle and written by Rasmus Birch—with a narrative loosely inspired by Karl Heinrich Ulrichs‘ 1884 mystery novel Manor—the film also stars Egor Venned, Sofia Nolsøe Mikkelsen, Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson, and Kjartan Hansen.
Early reviews out of its festival premieres have praised the production for its striking cinematography and the emotional weight of its central relationship, which shifts from tender and romantic in its first half to deeply melancholy and tragic as the supernatural elements take over.
