La Bola Negra
Netflix’s Spanish-language queer epic La Bola Negra, directed by Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, has won the prestigious People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival, instantly cementing its status as an Oscar-season frontrunner.
Spanning decades and featuring a star-studded cast including Penélope Cruz and Glenn Close, the film’s TIFF victory marks Netflix’s first-ever win for the festival’s top honor, a prize historically known as a reliable barometer for Academy Award Best Picture nominations.
Following its Cannes debut, Netflix secured the project and planned a historic 47-day exclusive theatrical release starting October 16 before hitting the platform on December 2, successfully positioning powerful queer storytelling at the center of the global awards race.
