In a departure from the usual meteorological updates, viewers of ITV’s This Morning in the UK were treated to a truly unforgettable weather forecast on Thursday, July 24th.
Former Olympic diving sensation Tom Daley swapped his traditional attire for something far more fitting to his athletic past – his signature speedos – as he made a “dream come true” delivering the day’s forecast in a segment that blended humor, an important safety message, and plenty of splashes.
The segment, which quickly went viral, saw Daley initially appear in a vibrant, waterproof jacket before stripping down to a pair of form-fitting, heat-sensitive knitted trunks that visibly changed color as water was poured over them. With co-hosts (the hilarious) Alison Hammond and Dermot O’Leary looking on in amusement (and at one point, Alison herself drenching him with a watering can), Daley delivered a playful yet informative forecast.
During his pre-weather interview with Alison and Dermot, Daley revealed the surprising origin of this unique aspiration. He confessed that when he was younger, he’d had a long-held, albeit unusual, desire to be a weather presenter. “When I was younger, they were doing this local radio thing where they were going around schools and you could apply to read the weather on the radio,” Daley explained, a nostalgic grin on his face. “My friend got chosen and I was jealous she got to do it. I never got to do the weather.”
This childhood wish, however, was clearly overshadowed by his incredible diving career, culminating in multiple Olympic medals. But This Morning proved that it’s never too late to fulfill a quirky ambition.
Beyond the entertainment value, Daley also used his platform to promote a crucial “Don’t Drink and Dive” campaign, coinciding with World Drowning Prevention Day. He highlighted the statistic that “1 in 4 UK drownings involve alcohol, and the risk is 5X higher when it’s over 20°C.”
In true comedic fashion, Daley concluded his “Daley Weather Forecast” with, “In summary, this weekend heavy rain seems to have thrown in the towel,” before dramatically discarding a towel and striking a pose, “so with my towel and my trunks already on, I’m beach ready!” The segment ended with enthusiastic applause, leaving many viewers hoping this isn’t the last time we see Tom Daley bringing his unique brand of sunshine (and rain) to the weather report.
