LaKendrick El said he plans to resign at an upcoming Virginia Beach Human Rights Commission meeting after coming under fire for posts on his Facebook page, reports The Virginian Pilot.
“I joined the Human Rights Commission to make a difference, not to cause discomfort or disappointment,” El said in a statement Saturday, “and the latter is sadly what’s taken place.”
The statement was released through Marcus Calabrese, a public relations specialist who has been working with El.
Last week, leaders in Hampton Roads’ LGBT community began calling for El’s removal as a member of the commission.
They referenced two posts El recently made to his Facebook page in which he said homosexuality was an “abomination” and that transgender people suffer from a mental illness.
