The Haunted History of West Hollywood: Decoding the “Gay Black Dahlia” Cold Case

William Arnold Newton, aka  Billy London, RIP

For those who lived through the 1990s gay adult entertainment scene, the name Billy London carries a dark, lingering weight.

Born William Arnold Newton, the performer was a recognizable face in the industry, but his legacy was eclipsed by a gruesome and infamous end.

In a crime that shocked the community, Newton was murdered and his body dismembered, with only partial remains – reports vary between his head and limbs -discovered in a West Hollywood dumpster.

For over three decades, the case remained cold, baffling investigators and earning the haunting moniker of the “gay Black Dahlia.” It became a grim urban legend, a symbol of the vulnerability of queer performers in an era often indifferent to their safety.

Now, the decades of speculation are coming to an end. The new documentary, My Brother’s Killer, promises to provide the closure that has long eluded Newton’s family and the LGBTQ+ community.

Directed by Rachel Mason and produced and edited by Dion Labriola, the film serves as both a sensitive tribute to Newton’s life and an exhaustive examination of his death.

By weaving together rare archival footage, deep-dive investigative journalism, and crucial, previously unconfirmed leads surfaced via podcast listeners, the filmmakers have managed to reconstruct the events that led to that fateful day in West Hollywood.

The documentary is more than a true-crime exercise; it is an act of reclaiming a life from a tabloid headline. By moving past the sensationalism of the “Black Dahlia” comparison, Mason and Labriola focus on the human reality behind the horror, utilizing modern forensic curiosity and grassroots investigative efforts to finally piece together the narrative of what happened to William Arnold Newton.

After 32 years of silence, the mystery that haunted a generation is finally being laid to rest.

Currently, My Brother’s Killer is focused on its festival circuit rollout, having just held its world premiere at SXSW in Austin, Texas, this month. The film is expected to have a wider release later this year.
