Jesse Tyler Ferguson, best known for his Emmy-nominated role as Mitchell Pritchett on the hit sitcom “Modern Family,” is opening up about the criticism he received from some members of the LGBTQ+ community regarding his “stereotypical” portrayal of a gay man.

In a recent episode of his podcast, “Dinner’s On Me with Jesse Tyler Ferguson,” the 49-year-old actor discussed the feedback he encountered during the show’s 11-season run.

“One of the pressures I’ve always felt, specifically after being on a show like Modern Family, where I’m portraying a gay man on a television show on a network that is as popular as it is,” Ferguson explained, “you receive criticism… but the criticism that I think I heard the loudest was always from the gay community.”

Ferguson stated that the concern often revolved around the idea that his character “didn’t represent their idea of what a gay relationship was, or a gay man was.” However, the actor emphasized that he always took such remarks “with such a grain of salt, because I’m representing one person. I’m in charge of this one character.”

He further added that Mitchell was, in many ways, “a shade of who I was.” Joking about the “stereotypical” label, Ferguson quipped, “If it’s stereotypical, I’m basically playing myself, so, I guess, guilty as charged.”

While “Modern Family” was groundbreaking for its mainstream depiction of a gay couple raising a family, the show faced various critiques over the years, including the initial lack of physical affection between Mitchell and his husband, Cameron Tucker (Eric Stonestreet), leading to a fan-led campaign.

Despite some backlash, the series garnered immense popularity and numerous awards, including GLAAD Media Awards for its positive representation.
