Fresh off the final season of Netflix’s Elite, Spanish actor Omar Ayuso is set to captivate audiences once again in the upcoming mini-series Silencio.

The three-part horror drama, created by acclaimed director Eduardo Casanova, promises a unique and deeply impactful exploration of queer themes, utilizing a vampire narrative to confront the historical and ongoing stigma surrounding HIV/AIDS.

While details about Ayuso’s specific character in Silencio remain under wraps, teasers suggest a role that is both vulnerable and visually striking. The series centers on two vampire sisters navigating a perilous shortage of “clean” human blood amidst the onslaught of the AIDS epidemic in 1980s Spain.

This premise, as Casanova has revealed, serves as a powerful metaphor for societal stigmatization and rejection, drawing a direct parallel between the vampires’ need for “clean” blood and the devastating impact of AIDS.

The very title, Silencio, is a poignant nod to the “Silence = Death” slogan and pink triangle adopted by ACT UP in the 1980s, a rallying cry for HIV/AIDS awareness and activism. Casanova emphasizes the show’s intent to break the silence and destigmatize HIV/AIDS, stating that the subject has been “mistreated in cinema” and requires “new narratives and perspectives that speak about it: women, homosexuals, HIV-positive people.”

This commitment to authentic queer storytelling is a hallmark of Ayuso’s career. He rose to international fame playing Omar Shanaa, a closeted gay Muslim character on Elite, whose journey of self-discovery and relationship with Ander Muñoz resonated with millions.

His upcoming projects continue to reflect this dedication, including the musical TV series Mariliendre, where he plays a “supermodel with an explosive personality” in a story that aims to reclaim the derogatory term “f*g hag” with pride. He also stars in “On the Go”, a film featuring a character navigating abandonment issues through Grindr hookup culture, further showcasing his willingness to tackle nuanced and often raw depictions of queer life.

Silencio is poised to be a significant addition to this growing body of work. By blending elements of horror, dark comedy, and profound social commentary, the mini-series aims to reach a broad audience and foster understanding around critical issues. Its world premiere is slated for August at the prestigious Locarno Film Festival, where it will be presented as the lone television series in the Out of Competition section.

With its bold premise and Omar Ayuso’s involvement, Silencio promises to be a timely and impactful series that not only entertains but also sparks vital conversations about history, prejudice, and the enduring power of breaking the silence.
