Shoppers at several IKEA locations across the United States, including California, were met with an unexpected burst of color and celebration recently, as impromptu Pride parades spontaneously erupted within the sprawling aisles of the furniture giant.
Videos of the in-store festivities have rapidly gone viral on social media, garnering millions of views and widespread praise for the unexpected displays of LGBTQ+ inclusivity.
One particular TikTok video, which quickly amassed over a million likes, showed individuals pushing creatively decorated small floats, resembling miniature versions of traditional parade floats, through an IKEA store as others cheered and Lady Gaga‘s “Born This Way” blared through the speakers. The user who uploaded the video expressed surprise, noting, “came to IKEA and they had a Pride parade. This caught me off guard ya’ll.”
While the parades appeared to be spontaneous expressions of joy and allyship from both employees and customers, IKEA’s official social media accounts, including IKEA Norway, were quick to show support.“We’re proud to stand for love, equality, and being who you are. Always. 🌈” read a comment from IKEA Norway.
The viral moments underscore IKEA’s broader, ongoing commitment to supporting the LGBTQ+ community. This year, IKEA U.S. has publicly announced its support for Pride festivities in major cities like Washington, D.C., San Francisco, and the Twin Cities, and has committed to donating revenue from sales of its iconic STORSTOMMA bag to organizations like The Trevor Project, an LGBTQ+ crisis hotline, and Rainbow Railroad, which helps LGBTQ+ individuals facing persecution find safety.
“As a company who has always stood by the many, IKEA U.S. is proud to support and celebrate the LGBTQIA+ community and allies in their work to make meaningful and measurable change,” an IKEA U.S. spokesperson stated.
These in-store parades, seemingly a grassroots extension of their corporate values, have resonated deeply with online audiences, further cementing IKEA’s reputation as a visible and active ally to the LGBTQ+ community.
