Filmmaker Joseph A. Adesunloye, known for his compelling and often challenging narratives, is set to bring his latest feature, “Vanilla,”to audiences, with a strong emphasis on its poignant exploration of gay relationships and infidelity.

“Vanilla” centers on Bastien and Matt, an interracial gay couple, who head to sunny Barcelona for their third anniversary, hoping to mend a rocky relationship strained by Bastien’s recent affair with a woman.

As Matt grapples with the lingering hurt and its impact on their intimacy, their efforts to reconnect are disrupted by the arrival of Florent, a queer Englishman living in Spain, who catches Bastien’s eye and further complicates their already fragile bond. The film delves into the complexities of trust, desire, and the evolving nature of queer relationships when faced with external temptations and internal struggles.

Adesunloye, a British-Nigerian producer/writer/director, has a history of exploring diverse and often underrepresented stories. His previous works, such as “White Colour Black” and “Faces” (which also featured a gay couple storyline), demonstrate his commitment to nuanced character development and examining identity. “Vanilla” continues this tradition, offering a raw and honest look at the intricacies of love and betrayal within a gay relationship.

“Vanilla” was selected for Locarno Pro’s First Look on UK Cinema in 2023, generating early buzz for its narrative and performances by Yann Gaël and Gabriel Winter.

While specific public screening dates for “Vanilla” are still emerging, the film is actively seeking festival distribution and wider release. Audiences should keep an eye on independent film festival schedules and announcements from distributors like The Open Reel for upcoming opportunities to experience this compelling queer drama.
