“The History of Sound” an upcoming queer romance film, is based on Ben Shattuck’s Pushcart Prize-winning collection of twelve short stories. Spanning three centuries, the stories explore love and loss across generations, with each story revealing new insights into the previous one.
The title story focuses on Lionel (Paul Mescal) and David (Josh O’Connor, “God’s Own Country”), two young men who, in the shadow of World War I, set out to record the lives, voices, and music of Americans. As they document these stories, they also fall in love.
The feature finished production a few months ago. The distributor says it’s planning a theatrical release for 2025, following a world premiere to be announced in the coming months.
