As The 12 Step Store in West Hollywood celebrates its 21st anniversary this month, founder RJ Holguin  reflects on the journey that began with a simple idea and a leap of faith.

“In 2003, I had a little success with my design business,” RJ recalls. “I was offered another storefront space and, after much deliberation, decided to open a gift store that celebrated life in a 12-step journey.”

One of the biggest challenges RJ faced during the opening process was the unexpected loss of a close friend. “It was a huge blow to the excitement we had,” RJ admits. However, with determination and support from his team, he persevered and opened the store.

RJ also faced a personal challenge during the opening week. “I had to choose between attending a life coach training or being present for the store opening,” he explains. “It was a difficult decision, but I ultimately chose to attend the training.”

The store’s opening has had a profound impact on RJ’s own sobriety journey. “It’s been a journey of discovery and education,” he says. “The store has allowed me to connect with others in recovery and learn more about myself… As the store’s buyer, I have had the unique opportunity to learn and educate myself about all kinds of addictions.”

While the store’s clientele has evolved over the years, one product remains a consistent bestseller: medallions to celebrate recovery time. “It signifies such an accomplishment,” RJ explains. “It’s a tangible reminder of the progress made.”

As The 12 Step Store looks toward the future, RJ remains optimistic. “We’re grateful for the support we’ve received over the years,” he says. “We hope to continue providing a space for people to connect and celebrate recovery.”
