The spirit of punk-rock filmmaking is taking over Sunset Boulevard this April. Curators Daniel Talbott, Andrew Klaus-Vineyard, and Felix Mack have announced “Our Heroes Bleed Glitter,” a curated screening of award-winning queer short films designed to capture the modern zeitgeist.

The event will take place at the iconic Cinelounge Los Angeles on April 2nd at 7:30 PM, bringing a raw, “DIY” aesthetic to the heart of Hollywood.

Originating in the mid-1980s as a gritty offshoot of punk subculture, Queercore filmmaking is defined by its defiance. It serves as a cinematic middle finger to societal disapproval and a celebration of LGBTQ+ identity.

The films selected for this showcase embody the “indie film lifer” obsession – a term famously coined by director Sean Baker. The lineup features projects born from various origins: some are micro-budget shorts filmed with zero dollars and skeleton crews, while others have been bolstered by international film funds. Regardless of the budget, the curators emphasize that each film shares a common thread of emotional and spiritual risk.

“We’re beyond excited to share these films in LA,” the curation team stated. “We really hope audiences will come and see them in a cinema—the way they were made to be seen—and celebrate indie filmmaking with us.”

The evening is split into two halves, featuring a “prism of queerness” through narratives and documentaries from Belgium, Russia, France, and the United States.

  • SHUTTERSPEED (Belgium) – Dir. Jasper De Maeseneer
