#ICYMI: How ‘Breaking Fast” Reclaims the Narrative for Gay Muslims. WATCH!

Scene from “Breaking Fast”

Directed by Mike Mosallam, Breaking Fast (2020) is a celebrated gay romantic comedy that stands out for its specific, heartfelt exploration of faith and identity.

Unlike many “coming out” dramas, it features a lead character whose religion and sexuality exist in harmony rather than conflict.

Set in West Hollywood, the story follows Mo (Haaz Sleiman), a practicing Muslim doctor who is nursing a broken heart. While observing the holy month of Ramadan, he meets Kal (Michael Cassidy), an “all-American” actor who surprises Mo by speaking Arabic and showing a deep respect for his traditions.

The two strike up a unique bond: because Mo is fasting and refraining from “impure thoughts” during the day, the two spend their nights getting to know each other over Iftar (the meal that breaks the fast).

This creates a “chaste” romance that focuses on intellectual and emotional intimacy rather than physical attraction.

Available on various platforms, including The Roku Channel, Tubi and Amazon Prime Video.
