The Vietnamese transgender drama Skin of Youth, directed by Ash Mayfair, has just won the Golden Peacock for Best Feature Film at the 56th International Film Festival of India (IFFI).
The film, which secured the festival’s top prize (including a cash award of approximately $45,000), tells the powerful, gritty romance of San (a transgender sex worker saving for surgery, played by trans actress Tran Quan) and her devoted lover, Nam, an underground cage fighter, set in 1990s Saigon.
Skin of Youth is hailed for being the first Vietnamese fiction feature to cast a transperson in the lead role, bringing crucial queer visibility to the screen. The award adds to the film’s growing international acclaim.
