Pro soccer player Josh Cavallo, who made history as one of the few openly gay male top-flight footballers, is lending his experience and voice to an upcoming online series titled “Armour,” which will explore the journey of a gay Premier League player coming out publicly.

The Australian midfielder, who came out in 2021, is attached to the project as a consultant to ensure the story’s authenticity and emotional truth. Cavallo recently expressed his enthusiasm on social media, calling it a “powerful new UK series” that “reflects courage, truth, and the battles many of us face in sport and beyond.”

The 10-episode web series, which will be free to watch on YouTube, is set to follow the fictional protagonist, an international pro footballer, as he grapples with the decision to publicly reveal his sexuality after private exchanges fall into the wrong hands.

The series centers on a gay Premier League player’s emotional struggle and the 12 hours immediately following his decision to come out.

Cavallo’s involvement as a consultant highlights a commitment to providing a “real and grounded” narrative, acknowledging both the triumphs and the significant challenges of being an out LGBTQ+ athlete in men’s professional football.

The series is set to star out gay actor Jordan Luke Gage, known for his work in the West End.

Show creator Tim Reynard stated the production aims to tell a “raw, authentic and filled with hope”story to inspire not only queer fans but also young players who need a role model.

Cavallo, who now plays in England, is recognized globally for his bravery in coming out, a move he described as a huge weight lifted off his shoulders.

Despite the positivity and worldwide support, he has also been vocal about the persistent homophobia and “toxic” environment he faces, including receiving daily death threats. His participation in “Armour” further cements his role as a prominent advocate for inclusivity and representation in the sport.

The series is reportedly set to begin filming next spring, with a release date yet to be announced.
