Elite British canoe sprint athlete Kurts Adams Rozentals has been handed a two-year ban from competition by UK Anti-Doping (UKAD), not for doping, but for violating strict social media rules after posting an explicit video on his Instagram account.

The Latvian-born rower, who has represented Great Britain in numerous international canoe events, is prohibited from competing until 2027, a ruling that effectively sidelines him through the next major international competitive cycle.

The disciplinary action was taken after Rozentals posted an explicit video on a public social media platform. While UKAD typically deals with substance violations, the ban was issued under rules governing athletes’ conduct and the protection of the sport’s reputation.

Rozentals has pushed back strongly against the severity of the ruling, arguing that the ban is disproportionate and points to systemic issues in athlete funding:

“This ban would have never happened if athletes were funded properly,” he told the BBC.

Rozentals contended that the precarious financial situation faced by many high-level athletes drove him to seek alternative ways to earn income, implying that the explicit content was related to a necessary side income stream.

He argued that if athletes were provided with adequate financial support to focus solely on their training and competition, they would not be forced into situations that compromise their public image or break conduct rules.

The case highlights the growing tension between the rigorous conduct standards imposed on elite athletes who represent their country and the financial realities they face outside of major funding cycles. UKAD and British Canoeing maintained that the two-year suspension was necessary to uphold the integrity and professional standards expected of national team members.
