Robert Irwin’s epic tribute to his mother, Terri Irwin, during “Dedication Night” on Dancing with the Stars this week moved audiences to tears.

The young conservationist and his professional partner, Witney Carson, performed a powerful contemporary routine that was an homage to the strength and unwavering support of his mother, Terri Irwin.

The pair danced to an emotional rendition of “You’ll Be in My Heart” by Phil Collins, a song famous for its themes of everlasting love and support. In his pre-performance video, Robert tearfully shared why he chose his mother, reflecting on her resilience after the tragic death of his father, Steve Irwin, in 2006.

“She’s an absolute hero to me,” Robert stated. “At every milestone when I just wish that my dad was there, she was there, and that was enough.”

The performance reached its emotional peak when Terri Irwin walked onto the dance floor to join her son and Witney for a tearful embrace. Judge Derek Hough, who won a previous season with Robert’s sister Bindi Irwin, was moved to tears, declaring: “The world needs the Irwin family.” The performance earned Robert and Witney a season-high score of 35 out of 40.

Beyond his heartfelt family life and work with wildlife, Robert Irwin is also celebrated by fans for his positive stance as an LGBTQ+ ally.

He has publicly spoken about the importance of family, which for him includes his close personal friends who are gay.

During his rise in popularity, particularly following a high-profile underwear campaign, Robert received a massive outpouring of support from the gay community. Sources close to the Irwin family have noted that letters and notes have increased, with many coming from LGBTQ+ fans who embrace him as a heartthrob and ally.

Robert’s genuine, wholesome persona and public support for his diverse circle of friends have solidified his status as a beloved figure within the community.
