Anticipation is building for Ryan Murphy’s latest anthology series, “American Love Story,” with the focus of its inaugural season set to explore the compelling and often tragic romance of John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette.
The series, slated for a February 2026 release during Valentine’s Day week, has now confirmed its main actors, promising a nuanced portrayal of the iconic American couple.
Newcomer Paul Kelly has been cast in the highly coveted role of John F. Kennedy Jr. After an extensive casting search involving over a thousand auditions, Murphy and his team settled on Kelly to embody the “American prince.”
Joining him as the enigmatic and fashion-forward Carolyn Bessette is Tony-nominated actress Sarah Pidgeon. Early promotional images released by Ryan Murphy Productions have already generated significant buzz, showcasing Kelly and Pidgeon in character and drawing strong reactions from fans and critics alike for their striking resemblance to the real-life figures.
The supporting cast also features a roster of acclaimed talent. Veteran actress Naomi Watts will portray the formidable and iconic Jackie Kennedy Onassis, JFK Jr.’s mother. Grace Gummer has been cast as Caroline Kennedy, John F. Kennedy Jr.’s sister, while Sydney Lemmon will play Carolyn’s sister, Lauren Bessette. Rounding out the significant roles is Alessandro Nivola, who will take on the part of renowned fashion designer Calvin Klein, Carolyn’s former employer.
“American Love Story” is described as a scripted anthology series delving into sweeping true love stories that captivated the world. The first installment will explore the intense media scrutiny and personal pressures that ultimately frayed the bond between JFK Jr. and Carolyn Bessette, offering a fresh perspective on their much-publicized relationship. Filming for the series is currently underway in New York City.
As a gay man who has consistently championed LGBTQ+ stories and representation throughout his prolific career, Ryan Murphy brings a unique lens to exploring complex relationships within the public eye.
