Agustín Della Corte, “Olympo”
Netflix’s new Spanish-language drama, Olympo, is generating significant buzz, particularly for its central gay storyline.
This intense series, which just premiered, dives into the lives of elite athletes at a cutthroat training academy, promising plenty of drama, competition, and steamy romance.
Roque: A Groundbreaking Gay Athlete
While Olympo features a talented ensemble, including Clara Galle as swim captain Amaia and Nuno Gallego as rugby star Christian, the series’ true MVP is Agustín Della Corte as rugby player Roque.
Della Corte brings to life a remarkably complex and compelling storyline that boldly confronts homosexuality and homophobia within the high-stakes world of professional sports.
Roque, an exceptional athlete and team captain, often feels isolated for being an out gay man. Yet, this doesn’t deter him from pursuing intimate encounters. Early on, a passionate (and nearly interrupted) romp with teammate Diego (Gleb Abrosimovv) sets the tone. However, the true heart of Roque’s journey lies in the electric, unspoken tension with Sebas (Juan Perales), a closeted teammate.
Their connection, initially conveyed through stolen glances, ignites in a celebratory, post-World Cup qualification shower scene that left both the characters and viewers breathless. This moment is surpassed by a later, even hotter encounter that pushes boundaries with its raw intimacy, without being explicitly graphic, creating a sensation online.
Sexuality at the Forefront: Drama and Intrigue
Roque’s sexuality is not relegated to the sidelines; it becomes a pivotal force in Olympo‘s first season. His openness generates friction within his team, creating both sexual and interpersonal tension. Simultaneously, it propels him into the public spotlight, drawing the attention of Olympo, a sports apparel brand. The company sees an opportunity to “pinkwash” its image and deflect from its own questionable practices by recruiting Roque for sponsorships and scholarships.
When Roque sustains an injury that jeopardizes his World Cup participation, Olympo offers him exclusive, top-secret medical support. But this treatment comes with a disturbing side effect: a complete loss of pain sensation. The eight-episode season is packed with this kind of compelling drama, intrigue, and, of course, plenty of sizzling scenes featuring ripped athletes, guaranteeing to keep you hooked.
Agustín Della Corte: From Rugby Star to Gay Icon
Just as Elite launched actors like Manu Ríos and Arón Piper to global stardom, Olympo is already doing the same for Agustín Della Corte. A fascinating parallel, the Uruguay-born star was an actual professional rugby player before becoming an actor, even making his Rugby World Cup debut at just 19.
After retiring from athletics in 2020, he transitioned to modeling and acting, earning his first major role in the Oscar-nominated film Society Of The Snow.
Olympo marks his most high-profile role yet, indicating a promising future for Della Corte as a rising star and a significant figure for LGBTQ+ representation in media.
The first season of Olympo is now streaming exclusively on Netflix.
