Netflix is set to release a highly anticipated feature film adaptation of Alice Oseman’s beloved queer love story, Heartstopper, in 2026.
This movie will serve as the culmination of the popular series, which began as an online comic and quickly became a cultural phenomenon after its 2021 announcement by Netflix.
Adding to the excitement, Netflix recently released the first image from the Heartstopper movie set, confirming that production has officially begun.
The image, shared on social media, features stars Joe Locke (Charlie) and Kit Connor (Nick) alongside creator Alice Oseman, igniting further anticipation among fans.
The Heartstopper series distinguished itself by faithfully adapting its source material, a raw and honest portrayal of LGBTQ+ teen life, including themes of homophobia and eating disorders.
Its success propelled stars Joe Locke and Kit Connor, who play the central couple Charlie and Nick, to household name status. Both actors have since taken on roles in other high-profile projects, such as Agatha All Along for Locke and Warfare for Connor, while co-star Yasmin Finney (Elle) has become a regular on Doctor Who.
Given the actors’ burgeoning careers and the Heartstopper comic nearing its final installment, Netflix made the strategic decision to conclude the narrative with a single feature-length film. This format allows for a more streamlined production schedule, making it easier to reassemble the in-demand cast, and provides ample post-production time to ensure a comprehensive wrap-up of all storylines.
What to Expect from the “Heartstopper” Movie
The film’s synopsis teases a new chapter for Nick and Charlie: “Nick and Charlie are inseparable, but with Nick preparing to leave for university and Charlie finding new independence at school, the reality of a long-distance relationship begins to weigh on them. Doubts takehold, and their relationship faces its biggest challenge yet. Meanwhile, their friends are also navigating the ups and downs of love and friendship, confronting the bittersweet challenges of growing up and movingon. Can first loves really last forever?”
While the full cast list beyond Connor and Locke has yet to be officially revealed, it’s a strong indication of their commitment that both lead actors are taking on executive producer roles for the first time. This suggests that other beloved series regulars, including Yasmin Finney (Elle), William Gao (Tao), Corinna Brown (Tara), and Kizzy Edgell (Darcy), are very likely to return.
The screenplay for the film was penned by author Alice Oseman, adapted from her forthcoming final volume of the comic. Stepping in to direct is Wash Westmoreland (Still Alice), replacing Euros Lyn, who directed all three seasons of the series.
Oseman, Lyn, Connor, and Locke are joined by Patrick Walters, Iain Canning, and Emile Sherman as executive producers, ensuring a consistent vision for the beloved story.
