Jason Collins, the NBA’s first openly gay active player, married film producer Brunson Green in Austin, Texas, their current home, this past weekend, reports Outsports.
The couple, together for roughly a decade, reportedly became engaged during the Los Angeles Lakers Pride Night in 2023.
While the newlyweds have shared limited details on social media, Collins’s Instagram stories have highlighted the outpouring of support from wedding guests, including friends, family, and former New Jersey Nets teammate Richard Jefferson. The two were part of the inaugural Nets team to reach the NBA Finals.
The rehearsal dinner featured a lively re-enactment of the “Aladdin” flying-carpet scene by two local drag queens. Green is known for producing the critically acclaimed film The Help, which garnered a Best Picture nomination at the Academy Awards and PGA Awards. Starring Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, and Emma Stone, the film was a box office success, earning $216 million on a $25 million budget. His next film, Regretting You, is currently in production.
Collins made history in 2013 with his public coming-out on the cover of Sports Illustrated. As a free agent at the time, he later signed with the Brooklyn Nets, playing in the second round of the NBA Playoffs that year. His continued success demonstrated that an openly gay man could thrive in major American professional sports.
Since then, Collins has been a prominent advocate for LGBTQ acceptance in sports, making himself exceptionally accessible to the community. He has collaborated with the NBA for years, representing the league at various events, including a recent LGBTQ youth clinic at the men’s NCAA basketball Final Four.
