How CALFRESH Helps To Build Healthier Communities

The CalFresh Program, California’s implementation of the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), is administered locally by the Department of Public Social Services (DPSS) to help low-income families and individuals in Los Angeles County stretch their food budgets and put more nutritious food on their tables.

DPSS aims to connect residents in greatest need to essential food resources by removing the barriers to applying for CalFresh, and simplifying the application process by encouraging applicants to apply online at BenefitsCal.com.

“Just putting three meals a day on the table is a daily struggle for too many families in Los Angeles County,” said DPSS Director Jackie Contreras.  As Director of the largest social services department in the nation, Contreras often shares how food subsidy programs, such as CalFresh, helped her family during tough financial times when she was a child.

Consistent access to nutritious food is the foundation of a strong and healthy community. CalFresh is not just a food benefit, but also a resource for wellness, stability, and reducing the financial stress on families.

DPSS encourages residents to share information about CalFresh with those in their community who need it most.

Stay connected by following DPSS on its social media accounts, or visiting the DPSS Community Events Calendar.
