Less than two years after marrying, billionaire music executive David Geffen, 82, has filed for divorce from his husband, 32-year-old dancer David Armstrong (also known as Donovan Michaels).
According to divorce documents obtained by PEOPLE, the couple, who wed in March 2023, did not have a prenuptial agreement. Citing “irreconcilable differences,” Geffen filed the petition in Los Angeles on Friday, May 16, with a separation date listed as February 22, 2025. Laura Wasser, a prominent celebrity divorce attorney, is representing Geffen. TMZ initially reported the split.
David Geffen’s influential career in the music industry includes co-founding Asylum Records in 1971, followed by the establishment of Geffen Records in 1980 and DGC Records in 1990. He also co-founded DreamWorks Records in 1996.
Now retired, Forbes estimates his net worth to be around $8.7 billion, largely comprised of stocks and property equities. According to TMZ, California law regarding the separate nature of stock dividends suggests Armstrong may not receive a significant portion of this wealth. However, the same state law mandates that Geffen, as the divorce petitioner, pay spousal support for one year, equivalent to half the length of their marriage.
The divorce filing also indicates Geffen will cover Armstrong’s spousal support and attorney’s fees.
