Matt Bomer on Traveler
During a recent appearance on the Dinner’s on Me podcast with Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Matt Bomer recalled the time when he was outed, which he noted as a time “when folks could kind of take over your own personal narrative before you even had a chance to.”
Bomer specifically called out “outlets like Perez Hilton,” who he said seemed to enjoy “talking about my personal life before I had ever had a chance to even do it myself. And it wasn’t because I didn’t want to; I didn’t even have an opportunity to.”
The actor officially came out as gay while accepting an award in 2012 at the Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards. In the speech, Bomer thanked his husband, publicist Simon Halls, and their three children for being in his life.
Prior to Bomer officially coming out, though, rumors and stories about his sexuality had dominated the headlines.
According to Bomer in an interview with THR’s Awards Chatter podcast last year, the internet storm of rumors about his sexuality even caused him to lose out on playing Superman in a film that never came to light by Brett Ratner. In the end, Bomer feels it was “unfair” that the moment was taken from him, even if he never hid his relationships.
“I just didn’t have a career that warranted that,” Bomer said. “And so it felt kind of unfair to me, that that was stolen by people who did have a microphone at the time. It was a weird time. Even when we were walking around in the streets, you know, there’d be pictures of Simon and our kids and I.”
Bomer currently stars in Hulu’s Mid Century Modern alongside Nathan Lane and Nathan Lee Graham.
