WEB EXCLUSIVE: The Rise of Bisexuality

By Victor Melamed

The landscape of sexual orientation is undergoing a significant shift. Recent data from Gallup reveals a striking increase in the number of Americans identifying as LGBTQ+, with bisexuality emerging as the most common identity within our community.

This trend, particularly pronounced among younger generations, is prompting a deeper understanding of sexual fluidity.

A Generational Shift

The most significant driver of this change is the younger generation. A staggering 59% of Gen Z and 52% of millennial LGBTQ+ individuals identify as bisexual, compared to a significantly lower proportion among older generations. This suggests a growing acceptance of diverse sexual orientations and a more fluid understanding of identity among younger adults.

Sexuality Spectrum

However, the true number of people having both same-sex and opposite-sex encounters is actually much higher, a scientist suggests.

Dr. Jason Hodgson, anthropologist and evolutionary geneticist at Anglia Ruskin University, thinks most people are “in the bisexual range.”

He says sexuality is a spectrum, from exclusively heterosexual at one end, through the bisexual range, to exclusively homosexual at the other end.

Heterosexuality and homosexuality are at the extremes of this spectrum, so most people should be somewhere in the middle in that they have sex with both men and women.

“… Most people should actually be bisexual,” Dr Hodson told MailOnline.

“The genes that influence same sex sexual behaviour are probably just genes that influence general sociality, and people in the middle of the range of variation are probably better at all social relationships.”

Beyond Labels

This rise in reported bisexuality may also reflect a shift in how individuals perceive and express their sexual identities. “Younger generations are more likely to embrace a broader spectrum of sexual orientations and to recognize that sexual attraction and romantic attraction are not always aligned,” researchers explain. “Labels like ‘bisexual’ may provide a more inclusive and nuanced way for individuals to express their experiences.”

Social and Cultural Factors

Increased visibility and representation of LGBTQ+ individuals in media and popular culture have undoubtedly played a role in this evolving landscape. Growing social acceptance and a more open dialogue around sexuality have created a more supportive environment for individuals to explore and express their identities authentically.

Challenges and Considerations

While this shift represents a positive step towards greater inclusivity, it’s crucial to acknowledge the challenges that bisexual individuals continue to face.

Bi Erasure: Bisexuality is often misunderstood or dismissed, with some individuals facing pressure to conform to either a heterosexual or homosexual identity.

Stigma and Discrimination: Bisexual individuals may experience unique forms of discrimination and prejudice, both within and outside the LGBTQ+ community.

Moving Forward: The rise of bisexuality underscores the need for continued education and awareness about diverse sexual orientations. By challenging societal norms and promoting a more inclusive understanding of sexuality, we can create a more accepting and equitable world for all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation.
