LA COUNTY HATE CRIMES REPORT 2ND HIGHEST IN OVER TWO DECADES

The Los Angeles County Commission on Human Relations released its annual analysis of hate crimes in 2022, reporting an 18% increase in such incidents, reaching the second-highest number in over 20 years. Hate crimes have been steadily rising for eight years, with a 143% increase since 2013. African Americans were the most frequent targets, and anti-Asian hate crimes reached the second-highest total ever. Other concerning trends include historic highs in explicitly anti-immigrant hate crimes and a growth in hate crimes targeting the LGBTQ+ and Jewish communities. Notably, 72% of hate crimes were violent, marking the second-highest percentage in two decades. The report highlights the need for anti-hate programs and support for victims, with the LA vs Hate initiative addressing this through a community-driven campaign, a government hotline, and a network of agencies offering support and advocacy.
